The Future of European Security and Defence Cooperation

Invitation for students and Young Professionals

Join the discussion on the future of European security and defence! On Wednesday 22 November 2017 (19.00-22.00) the Netherlands Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence will host the conference ‘In Defence of Europe’ for students and young professionals. This conference is co-organised by the Netherlands Society for International Affairs, Leiden University and the Netherlands Youth Atlantic Treaty Association.

European security and defence cooperation has gained fresh momentum. With a deteriorating security environment to Europe’s east and south, Brexit and the agreement within NATO that European members should take a bigger share in their own defence, the pressure on Europe to take more responsibility for its own security is rising. What should the future of European security and defence look like?

Policymakers at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence would like to hear your views on this. The conference facilitates direct exchanges between policymakers and a young group of people to test ideas and get innovative and refreshing input on policy dilemmas. Themes that will be discussed in the smaller sessions include developments in EU defence cooperation, opportunities and challenges in EU missions and operations, EU-NATO cooperation and bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation in Europe.

We start at 19:00 uur with a keynote speech by Pieter Jan Kleiweg de Zwaan, Deputy Director-General for Political Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
