The NGIZ was founded after the Second World war. Its mission then was to act as an independent public platform for the exchange of knowledge and views concerning international issues; in particular issues relevant for the Netherlands and Dutch society. This year, we celebrate our 70th anniversary under the heading of ‘70 years of freedom, 70 years forward’. Freedom and liberty, democracy and human rights, the rule of law, etc. are under severe pressure in the world of today. Pressure as a result of conflict and civil war, dictatorship and poverty, and of the challenge of rising powers which do have different views regarding the values and principles that underpin the global order. The question what freedom means in the world of today and tomorrow therefore is the overarching theme of the activities during this NGIZ anniversary.

We close our anniversary year with special speeches by:

Sigrid Kaag   Sigrid Kaag and Monika Sie  Monika Sie Dhian Ho Clingendael Institute

Both speakers will address the refugee crisis from a broader perspective. Sigrid Kaag, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, will speak about the causes of the refugee crisis and the need for collective security in the Middle East. Monika Sie Dhian Ho, Director Wiardi Beckman Foundation and newly appointed Director of the Clingendael Institute will address the refugee crises from a European perspective.

The presentations are in English and will be followed by Q&A.
