NGIZ-Noord: Masterclass in Diplomacy

On the 19th and 20th of April NGIZ-noord organises a Masterclass in diplomacy in The Hague. On the 19th we will visit the embassies of Germany and France and receive information about the work they do here. How does further European Integration influence the work done at embassies? The next day we will pay a visit to Clingendael, the Netherlands institute of International Relations.

The Masterclass is aimed at students in the fields of International relations, European and International law who are in the final stages of their bachelor or are taking their masters. If the number of applicants exceeds the available places we will make a selection.

The Masterclass is free of charge, you will however have to pay your own train tickets and organise your own sleeping arrangements, or alternatively, travel from Groningen to The Hague on both days. Participants are expected to attend both days of the masterclass. If you would like to participate, please send an e-mail to ngiznoord@clingendael.nl before the 8th of April. Please give us your name and telephone number, and mention your field of study (bachelor or master). If you have any questions you can also direct them to this address.

NGIZ-Noord & SIB-Groningen present a symposium on;

China and the World

For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, MAO's successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight. China since the early 1990s has increased its global outreach and participation in international organizations.

NGIZ-Noord and SIB-Groningen are organising a symposium to discuss what influence China has in other parts of the world. There will be a plenary lecture followed by several workshops, where experts on this area will elaborate on this issue. The plenary lecture will be presented by Bettine Vriesekoop. Ms .Vriesekoop worked as a China correspondent for 'NRC Handelsblad'. There will be four workshops. 'China and the New Scramble for Africa' will be given by dr. Doortmont, he is a Professor in International Relations and Africa Studies. 'China and EU-relations will be given by dr. Gaenssmantel, he is a lecturer at the university of Groningen. 'China and US Security' will be given by dr. van der Putten, a senior research fellow at the Clingendael Security and Conflict and at Clingendael Asia Studies. The fourth workshop is on 'China in Asia', which will be given by Bettine Vriesekoop.

Please sign up at symposium.china@hotmail.com. You can sign up for two workshops, your first and second choice. Also mention your name, studentnumber and email address.

The International Criminal Court speaks: Justice in Libya on its way?

NGIZ-Noord present a lecture on: ICC and Libya

In a surprising move the United Nations Security Council unanimously referred the situation of Libya to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its resolution of 26 February 2011. On 3 March 2011 the ICC prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, announced the official opening of an investigation in Libya. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued on the 27th of June, arrest warrants for Libyan leader Muammar al-Qadhafi, one of his sons and the country’s intelligence chief for crimes against humanity allegedly committed since the pro-democracy movement began in February. Hundreds of people are confirmed to have been killed since opposition forces rose up against the regime of Mr. Qadhafi in February as part of a wider pro-democracy movement across North Africa and the Middle East.

In the first NGIZ lecture on Global Justice, Mr. Fabio Rossi will share his insight knowledge on the increased prominence of the ICC at the international stage in the last months. After a short introduction to the work of the Office of the Prosecutor, he will focus upon the case of Libya and other pending cases at the Hague. How did the resolution of 26 February 2011 came into being with the support of China, Russia and the United States, which are not particularly known for their support to the ICC? Mr. Fabio Rossi works as an International Cooperation Adviser at the Office of the Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo.
